If you’ve been on Snapchat you may have noticed something taking over people’s stories, the social app Gas.
The new social platform is surging in popularity among Generation Z (and even the youngsters of Gen Alpha) as it promises to promote “positivity” among its users.
What is the Gas App on Snapchat?
Gas is a new social platform app that launched in August 2022 and has surged in popularity among high school-aged youngsters.
It was founded by Nikita Bier – who was one of the founders of TBH which was acquired by Facebook/Meta in 2017 and subsequently closed down in 2018.
The app is only available in the US currently (sorry to all those UK and international fans) and is an app based around bugging your friends up or “gassing” them up.
It’s currently number one on the iOS App Store with a tagline saying: ‘See who likes you. Find your crush.’
How does the Gas app work?
The Gas app asks users to anonymously answer questions about people in their high school, like ‘who do you secretly admire?’ or ‘their smile makes my heart melt’.
Users then choose between four people for each question who are all people from their high school and then they collect coins by answering questions.

The app description says:
- Join your school
- Add Friends
- Answer Polls
- Get flames when picked
It also states: ‘Gas is where friends tell you what they love about you,” the app says. “And no, they won’t dunk on you like other anonymous apps.’
Is the Gas app safe to use?
According to the Gas app’s privacy policy and safety centre, the app the “polls are uplifting so you can never be bullied”. It also states the app will:
- Not share or sell your data.
- Never track you across online services.
- Only request your approximate location once at signup to suggest nearby schools.
- Not store location data on our servers.
- Not link location data to your account.
- Only let friends, contacts, and classmates vote on each other. Never strangers.
- Not allow direct messages, even if you are friends.
- Review reports daily and remove rule-breakers.
- Provide live chat and email support to all users.
