The next crime documentary set to make waves on Netflix is Girl in the Picture, but as the plot details unfold people are asking if it’s a true story.
Girl in the picture will be dropping on the streaming site on July 6 and follows the decades-old mystery of a woman’s identity.

Directed by Skye Borgman, who was behind Netflix’s true-crime hits such as Abducted in Plain Sight and Dead Asleep, Girl in the Picture, follows the story of a young mother’s mysterious death and her son’s subsequent kidnapping, and a man claiming to be her husband.

The incident of her death blew open a huge decades-long mystery about the woman’s true identity and the murderous federal fugitive at the centre of it all.
The documentary follows the previous and modern search to find out what happened to the woman, and her son and to find the identity of the person behind it all.
Is Girl in the Picture a true story?
Like many other amazing Netflix crime docs, this one is another true story. The woman in the documentary is Sharon Marshall, who ultimately died under mysterious circumstances in 1990, leaving behind a man claiming to be her husband and her son.
It turns out Sharon was caught in a twisted web of the evil man she called her ‘father’ and didn’t even know Sharon wasn’t her real name. However, her true identity remained a mystery until 2014 when she was positively identified as Suzanne Marie Sevakis.
In 2004 a journalist, Matt Birkbeck, investigated the case o wrote his international bestseller, A Beautiful Child, and its follow-up, Finding Sharon, all about the devastating cases.

Along with the true-crime documentary, there will be a five-part podcast to accompany the film, also titled Girl in the Picture, as part of the You Can’t Make This Up podcast series.
Starting on June 29 the podcast will cover Sharon’s life, her death, and delve further into the mystery surrounding it all.
