Three Staycation Activities In North Devon

Surfing at Saunton Sands

Epitomising the pull of a staycation, Saunton is undeniably one of the most beautiful beaches in the UK, and has been rated as such by numerous beach rankings in the UK. The beach stretches for what seems like an eternity, offering stunning views from all areas of the beach. It feels as though you are fully immersed with the beach, detached from the stresses of everyday life.

For the majority of my time in North Devon, I went to Croyde beach, as it’s within walking distance from my work, but Saunton is on a completely different level. The waves are crisp and clean, with a better swell period on average than some of the nearby beaches.

For the non-surfers, Saunton also features some expansive sand dunes, stretching for miles beyond the limits of the beach. This is an added bonus if, somehow, the beautiful walk along the beach gets old during your staycation.

Cycling the Tarka Trail

There are numerous routes that would be fantastic for every level of cyclist, but the Tarka Trail is an absolute staple in North Devon. A scenic route from start to finish, with various towns along the way for a well earned break, it’s a great activity to do on staycation.

My favourite stretch of the Tarka Trail, however, is from Braunton to Appledore. Following the Taw river most of the way, it has some stunning views along one side for the duration of the ride. There are also some interesting checkpoints, like a ruined boat around Barnstaple, that only add to the beauty of the ride.

The Tarka Trail is really a vessel through which to take in some of the great natural scenery of North Devon, while getting away from the busy roads in the area. Often overlooked by many tourists, it is also an option that can be less busy than the beaches, but equally as picturesque.

Walking Around Baggy Point

Baggy Point is a headland between Croyde Bay and Morte Bay, with a well maintained footpath running most of the way. With fantastic ocean views throughout the walk, it’s my favourite place to be on a clear sunny day. It really proves the value of a staycation, as it provides some of the best views I’ve seen on any holiday.

Baggy Point is made even better by the fact that it is Westward-facing, giving you a front row seat to some breathtaking sunsets. Away from the pollution of big cities, the clear skies allow for some unbelievable views which are perfect for a romantic encounter or chatting with friends.

It is also a great walk during the day, as you are able to watch some of the talented surfers riding the waves at both Croyde Bay and Morte Bay. You can then convince yourself that you would have looked as good had you gone to Saunton and donned your own wetsuit.
