After watching the Tinder Swindler on Netflix earlier this week, it got me thinking about types of other Tinder horror stories of the worst dates students experienced during their time at university.
Tinder is an interesting app, some people on there are looking for a relationship of longevity, whereas some others are more just looking for some fun.
Working out who is looking for what can make using dating apps, like Tinder, a complete minefield. This can lead to dates where you are not on the same page, embarrassing stories, and most importantly; some unforgettable experiences and dates.
After interviewing some students across different universities, here are just a few of the selected best-worst Tinder dates:
Having a Date with your Ex’s Coach:
One Newcastle University student talked about experience they had. They decided to go for cocktails with someone that they’ve been talking to on Tinder.
They started by saying that the date went well as they had a lot in common; this then turned out to be much more so than they had anticipated.
As the conversion flowed they went on to start discussing sports, the student then realised their date coached the football team that her previous ex-boyfriend was a part of.
This quickly became an awkward encounter as the coach then started discussing the ex-boyfriend’s football skills, and what he needs to do to improve his game.
Needless to say, this wasn’t really on the list of ideal topics of conversation for the evening, and so following a few more drinks and awkward football team stories, they did not see each other again.
Dating the Same Person as your Friend:
Whilst at university you will soon recognise some familiar faces around town. You find out quickly that everybody ends up knowing most people in some way.
This can result in a nice community being formed, yet this can also means there can be crossover of connections and romantic entanglements.
This student from Brighton University had been on two dates with a boy that she had met on Tinder. The dates went very well and they ended up arranging a third date.
However, one evening one of her housemates started talking about a Tinder boy who she was going to meet for a date. This was at the same cocktail bar that the first student had been to with her Tinder guy.
The first student told her housemate the best cocktails to get and what to expect from this cocktail house. The first student then started to ask more questions about the Tinder guy who her friend was about to meet.
It later became apparent and then confirmed that it was the same Tinder boy. He was taking her best friend to the same location that they had been on the their first date.
Luckily the two managed to recognise this before the date. Yet nonetheless, it was still an awkward situation these two besties found themselves in.
What Schemes Are in Place To Help When Dates Go From Bad To Worse?
Many bars and pubs up and down the country have implemented a scheme called ‘Ask Angela‘. This is advertised on posters within the girl’s bathrooms, and around the vicinity of the bar.
Asking a member of the bar staff for ‘Angela’ can get you out of a situation if you feel uncomfortable, or a date that has potentially gone wrong.
This scheme was implemented in 2016. Bar staff are trained to either call a cab ride home for you, wait with you until a friend arrives, or get the police involved in this matter if something has gotten out of hand.
This is a safety backup and a very helpful tool regarding Tinder dates. Meeting people online can be a dangerous and daunting experience, yet schemes like this can really help.
Having a policy in place at the location where your date is, can ease any tensions; and also most importantly provide protection and safety.
