The United Kingdom is facing high temperatures this week from 35 degrees Celsius plus. It is important to keep yourself safe and hydrated. But it is also imperative to spread awareness of how to keep your four-legged friends safe too.

No matter what type of animal you have, remember that they feel the rising temperatures just as we do, and knowing the safe and practical ways to keep your animals cool is of vital importance.

Below are three of the best ways to ensure the safety of your pets during this unprecedented heatwave.

Shade and Water

Keeping your pets out of the sunlight and providing an ample amount of shade for them to sit or lie in is highly important.

Ensuring that they have a place to sit out of the sun to cool down will keep them safe. If you have fish, lizards, or anything that you keep in a tank or cage, ensure that you move this out of direct sunlight so that they don’t get too hot in their enclosure.

Keeping bowels of water out for them to drink, or even to lie in, is a  great idea, as they will then be able to cool themselves off when they feel themselves getting too hot.

If you have animals with paws, ensuring that you wet them will allow for them to cool down, as animals are different to humans in how they release heat. They do this through their paws instead of sweating all over the body like humans.

Limit Exercise

Although exercise is important, during this heatwave reduce the regular amount that you do. You can go on short walks if necessary, but having days off while these unprecedented temperatures reach new heights will be beneficial to you and your pet.

Placing a Cool Towel in the Freezer

By doing this overnight you can create a cold and comfortable blanket that will help when your pet becomes overheated.

This easy and cheap hack will ensure that your pets don’t suffer from sunstroke or heat stroke and can make them much more comfortable in this weather.
