Long day at uni? Well sometimes there’s nothing better to help you relax, and switch off your brain for a while, than to hate-watch movies with you housemates.
Sure, critically acclaimed classics can be insightful to watch, but sometimes joking over a trashy rom-com is much more entertaining.
Below I rank my favourite ‘so bad they’re good’ Netflix originals:
1. After
Based on a Wattpad fan fiction about Harry Styles, this three-part movie franchise, follows Tessa as she moves to college, meets stereotypical ‘bad boy’ Hardin, and falls into a whirlwind relationship before his poor intentions are revealed. From virgin shaming to coercive relationships, After is as cringy and problematic as it sounds, but hilarious to hate-watch. Three more After films have somehow been scheduled so there’s plenty of hate-watch movie marathon potential here.
2. Tall Girl
Tall Girl is a little more wholesome, with an inspiring message of getting over your insecurities. In true high school rom Com form, its love triangle orbited plot is just as cliché as after and perfect for a Tom com night. I am yet to watch Tall girl 2 but am certain it will only get cringier.
3. The Perfect Date
Starring Noah Centineo, The Perfect Date follows Brooke as he sets up a dating app in order to fund university where girls can pay for him to act as their date. It adds a modern twist to the conventional boy pretends to fall in love with a girl for personal gain, but accidentally falls in love storyline.
4. The Kissing Booth
The Kissing Booth films, of which there are three, get progressively worse but much more laughable as they go on. They centre on Elle as she navigates dating her best friend’s brother Noah and are sure to add a cringy light-hearted touch to any film night.
5. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Based on the novel by Jenny Han, this extremely popular rom-com follows Lara Jean, a teenager who writes secret letters to her crushes which unintentionally are sent out. TATB combines all the best rom-com tropes from love triangles to long-distance relationship struggles to fake relationships turning real, in a classic easy to watch Netflix original.
