He’s been the host since its revival in 1994, but University Challenge 2022 will be Jeremy Paxman’s last. After so many years at the desk, the BBC has found a new host to fill those big shoes.
It’s hard to imagine University Challenge without Jeremy Paxman. His stern and abrupt reactions to ridiculous answers have entertained the nation since 1994. Unfortunately due to medical reasons, the current series of University Challenge will be his last.
Why is Jeremy Paxman Leaving University Challenge?
Paxman revealed in May 2021 that he was receiving treatment for Parkinson’s disease and had described his symptoms as mild. It was then announced in August of this year that he would be stepping down from his role on University Challenge.
In a statement, the former journalist spoke about his wonderful experience on the show.
“I’ve had a blast hosting this wonderful series for nearly 29 years. I’ve been lucky enough to work with an amazing team and to meet some of the swottier brains in the country. It gives me hope for the future.”
Only last month did ITV air a documentary on Paxman and his experience with the disease. Paxman: Putting Up With Parkinson’s saw the 72-year-old attend ballet and bowls classes and also meet Sharon Osbourne. Sharon, whose husband Ozzy also has Parkinson’s, spoke of the role of a partner to someone who has the disease. It was revealed in the documentary that Paxman had filmed his last ever University Challenge on 15 October 2022.
The current series of University Challenge will continue to air into next year. Paxman’s last episode will be the finale of the 52nd series.
Who Is The New Host?
Shortly after Paxman was announced to be leaving the show, journalist and broadcaster Amol Rajan was confirmed to be taking over.
Rajan has been the BBC’s Media Editor since 2016 and presenter of the Radio 4 Today Programme since 2021. He has also previously presented on the One Show and BBC Radio 2.
On being asked to host, Rajan said it was a dream come true.
“Being asked to host my favourite TV programme is dream-come-true territory. I have watched University Challenge obsessively for years, addicted to its high standards, glorious title music, and inspirational contestants. It’s the best possible antidote to cynicism about young people, allowing millions of us to test our wits against the best minds of a new generation, and annoy and impress our families by barking answers from the sofa.
“I am very conscious that in the late, great Bamber, and that giant of British culture, Jeremy, I have vast shoes to fill. With his immense intellect, authority, and respect from students and viewers alike, Jeremy hands over a format, and show, as strong as ever.”
Rajan will begin filming early next year with the 53rd series of University Challenge. His tenure as host will then begin airing in the Autumn of 2023. Although he will be stepping down as Media Editor for the presenter role, he will continue to host BBC Radio 4 Today.
