If you are from a small town or village, and you’re heading to a big city university, it can be pretty daunting. I moved from a rural town to study in Birmingham and it was a real culture shock! The buildings are different, the air is different, and the people are too. But, it’s not all scary! It can be really fun. You’ll find a new sense of freedom! So, here are a few things to expect before you make the big move.
You won’t know everyone in the city
One of the characteristics of small town syndrome is the fact you know everyone. You most likely were born near this town. You grew up in this town. And went to school in this town. So, you probably know everyone. That’s one thing you certainly won’t have in the city. You’ll be able to leave your flat with the anonymity you’ve craved for years! The hungover walk of shame won’t get back to your parents somehow, and you can live the life you’ve wanted for a long time.
You’ll probably get lost
A city is much bigger than a town, obviously. So, you might be getting lost a few times! But that’s okay, it’s all part of the process. Don’t think that it’s a scary thing, because you can make it into something fun! You might discover a really cool bar or club while trying to get back on your route. There’s so much to see in a new place, so let yourself get lost!
You can express yourself
One of the biggest things people look forward to when moving to university is the chance to explore who they really are. If changing your look or experimenting with who you are is something you didn’t feel like you could do in a town, you can in a city! There will be nobody from your home town to make you feel like you can’t. You can be exactly who you want to be and blur into the hustle and bustle of city life.
Small towns can be great to live in. I really enjoyed my time in one but, eventually, you outgrow it in some way. It’s nice to return back to your home town. However, if you want something big, the city is for you! Don’t be afraid to make the big move; it may just be the best decision you’ve made yet.
