A new day, a new trend on TikTok, and today it’s all about the ‘coffee lemon hot water’ trick that users are promoting to aid weight loss, but does it work?

If it’s not a dance, or song there’s a new recipe or even a water bottle, making the rounds on the video-sharing app and going viral.

‘Coffee Lemon Hot Water’ TikTok

If the ‘healthy’ coke sasparilla and soda water mix wasn’t weird enough, say hello to the ‘coffee lemon hot water’ it’s the latest concoction to be doing the rounds on TikTok.

Some TikTok creators are claiming the blend of black coffee and lemon is the ‘trick’ or ‘secret’ to a ‘flat tummy’. One creator says their ‘top secret’ drink for a flat tummy is half a lemon squeezed into a mug, half a teaspoon of coffee and hot water mixed together – that’s it.

Some users have boasted the trick ‘works’ with some on the video saying it made them lose pounds in weight, but others are sceptical.

Does the TikTok trend work?

According to Alexandra Sowa, MD – a metabolic health physician, clinical professor of medicine at NYU School of Medicine and founder of SoWell Health – the combination ‘sounds tasty’ but said there is zero evidence to show this combo will actually do anything for a persons weight loss.

Dr Sowa told Good Housekeeping: ‘My first thought when I heard about this trend is that it doesn’t sound very tasty! But, there is no evidence that there is any particular benefit in drinking these two ingredients together.’

Dr Sowa went on to explain there is a logic behind the principle of the new fad diet, explaining caffeine is low in calories and fits well in many different weight loss plans.

She said: ‘Caffeine works by blocking a neurotransmitter called adenosine, which can lead to an increase in stimulating neurotransmitters like dopamine, which helps you feel more awake and energized—that’s why we all reach for our morning coffee.’

But ultimately came to the conclusion: ‘No doctor I know would ever recommend this as a way to lose weight,’ adding, ‘If someone does lose weight drinking lemon water, it may simply be because the person is swapping out sugar-sweetened beverages for the lemon water.’

So, there you have it, the drink won’t help aid any weight loss, but it may be a tasty treat for some people to kick off their days with?
