I studied for my BA degree at Nottingham Trent University and am now studying for my MA degree at Birmingham University. Here is my experience of attending two different universities.
I’ve found it harder to make friends as I haven’t already got a pre-established group due to switching universities. This means I had to work harder to find people to hang out with. It is unfortunately an aspect that I have very much struggled with but I’m getting there.
I’ve found that it is an opportunity to start again. As nobody knows me, I can be different to how I was while studying for my BA. I have also been able to engage in new activities such as writing and fencing. Previously I would have been worried about being on my own, but I have not worried about that at all this time round.
New opportunities
Studying at two universities means that I have been able to make the most of opportunities only offered at that specific establishment. That means I’m able to maximise my engagement with unique opportunities which I believe has served me well.
I believe that it has allowed me to push myself more. I also feel that working with a wide variety of academic staff across both universities has enabled me to expand academically and will benefit my studies immensely. I’m sure I will gain a better MA as a result of choosing to attend a different university.
Fresh start
Studying at two universities has allowed me to make the most of both experiences. I always knew that I would not be staying with the same institution for both levels of study. I believe that having this knowledge meant that I ensured that I had the best time possible at both.
It certainly hasn’t been a negative experience attending Nottingham Trent University for my BA and Birmingham University for my MA. In fact, it was the best thing for me and I would encourage others to consider doing the same.
