Following the completion of the three regional BUCS archery indoor qualifiers, we have now reached the 2022 finals and here’s what to expect.
Student archers, who have earned their place at these finals, will be heading to Coventry from all over to compete for glory. With the countdown clock about to strike zero, Freshered has the lowdown on all you need to know ahead of the finals.
From the timings of the events, to official advice from the organisers on what to wear, we will ensure to leave no stone unturned, in order to produce a comprehensive guide for spectators, and competitors alike.
Location and Date
The indoor finals are heading to a different location from the three regional qualifiers. The event is going to take place in the Sports and Wellness Hub, located in the Cryfield Village, at the University of Warwick, in Coventry. The postcode for the event is CV4 7EU.
Competitors do not have to wait long until they are immersed in the action, with the event taking place on Saturday, March 19. Better dust off those bow and arrows.
How will the Archers be assessed?
According to the event guide on the BUCS website, ‘the event will be shot to World Archery rules’ – but what are the World Archery rules?’
In order to seed the archers, they will compete in a World Archery 18m round – his consists of 60 arrows being shot, in ends of three arrows, on a 40cm target face, from a distance of 18 metres, according to Experience Archery.
To shoot these ends of three, archers will have two minutes. There will be up to 45 minutes of practice ahead of the round, with the scoring ranging from ten to one. Following this seeding, there will be then be head to head rounds to award the individual winners.
How will the individual medals be decided?
There are four separate categories being assessed at this year’s BUCS archery indoor finals: Recurve, Compound, Longbow, and Barebow.
The first two of these categories will shoot at a triple vertical 40cm face, with the latter two categories aiming to score on a full 40cm face. For Recurve, Longbow, and Barebow, the head to head will be judged on a best of five basis. For the Compund, it will be the highest score after 15 arrows.
What is the schedule for the event?
The schedule for the BUCS archery indoor finals is as follows:
- 7:30am: The hall can be accessed
- 8:30am: Qualification Session 1
- 11:45am: Qualification Season 2
- 2:45pm: Regional Medal Presentations
- 3pm: Head to Heads
- 6:15pm: Results, and Medal Presentations, conducted by Lady Paramount Phoebe Pine, gold medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
BUCS advice on clothing for the event
Clothing for the event ‘must conform’ to rule 307 of the Archery GB shooting rules; i.e. No blue denim, olive drape, or camouflage should be worn, with footwear enclosing toes, and the front of the foot. Apparently the hall can get quite cold, so warm clothing is advised.
Last pieces of advice
There is car parking available at both the Sports and Wellness Hub, and the Cryfield car park.
Archers are responsible for their own food and drink, with an on-site cafe available, serving refreshments throughout the day.
