What To Expect When Visiting Home For The First Time At Uni

It’s probably going to feel weird coming home from uni for the first time. You’ve just adjusted to entirely new friends and a new way of life. But now, you’re thrown straight back into the past. Here are a few things to expect when you first visit home again.

Missing University While Being at Home

It’s okay to miss university! Don’t feel guilty! In fact, it’s a great sign that you’re getting on well if you miss it. You’ve just spent a few weeks starting a brand new chapter of your life, and you’re probably quite used to it now. Of course, it’s nice to come home and see the family and friends that are still there. And your beloved pet. But the people that you’re now spending everyday with are still at uni or at home themselves. So you can miss them.

There’s a tendency to feel guilty about missing university when you leave, but don’t let it eat you up. The people around you will be so proud that you are enjoying it so much.

Food, glorious food!

No more uni meals! Wonderful home cooked dinners are back. Nothing says welcome back like a cooked roast dinner. Cooking may be the one thing you haven’t quite mastered yet at uni, so coming home can be a real relief. If those student cookbooks are collecting dust on your shelves, you will relish being back.

Time to yourself (not!)

Perhaps one of your favourite parts of university is the independence and freedom you get. Well, kiss goodbye to that when you come home. Nosy siblings, inquisitive parents…yep, you’re home! It might feel a bit claustrophobic and could annoy you a tad, but it’s all in the spirit of being home.

There is definitely something comforting about being back in your childhood bedroom, though. You’re reminded of all the times you were in there revising, and it makes you proud of how far you’ve come. It’s bittersweet, but part of the visit back!

Coming home from uni can be a bit of a rollercoaster and you’ll feel a lot of different emotions. Be ready for whatever and enjoy it!
