What To Realistically Expect Of Freshers’ Week

You’ve been sold this idea of Freshers’ Week being the highlight of your University year, right? Meeting new people, getting drunk and partying until the earlier hours. Whilst you might fall into this bracket, Freshers’ Week isn’t just about clubbing. Here’s what to realistically expect of your first week at Uni!

You’ll Meet People You’ll Never Speak to Again

You’ll make friends ‘for life’ and lose them all within the space of a week. It’s easy to attach yourself to the first people you speak to and that’s totally fine, but just be prepared that you probably won’t stay friends for long. You’ll soon learn that you have very different interests and will be too busy to meet up anyway. This is all part of the fun though and gets you introduced to lots of different people.

Freshers’ Events are Overhyped

T-shirt parties? Neon raves? Your University has probably advertised a range of different Freshers’ nights and parties. These sound like lots of fun but in fact, they can be a little awkward. Nobody knows each other and you’ll probably feel pressured into going to them even if they aren’t your thing. By the end of the week, you’ll feel tired and wonder why you forced yourself to go to these events every night!

You’ll Phone Home A LOT!

Convinced yourself that you’re ready for an independent life full of raving and not having to listen to your parents? Well, you’ve been fooled. You’ll phone home multiple times a day to the point where your parents are sick of you. If this isn’t the case then they will be the ones phoning you up all of the time. You can’t escape home even if you live miles away now.

Freshers’ Flu is Real

Heard of Freshers’ Flu but didn’t think that it would ever affect you? Well, it’s very real and it’s very bad. Look, I managed to get Freshers’ Flu without even going to the events so there is literally no escape. Everyone’s mixing with each other and soon enough, you’re coughing and sneezing. You’ll have the worst fever and headache you’ve ever had. Be prepared!

You’ll sign up to tons of societies

If you attend a societies’ fair on the first week, you’ll be bombarded with sign up sheets. You’ll desperately want to make friends and try something new. With this, you’ll sign up to around ten societies but you’ll only end up being involved in about two of them. You just won’t have the time!

Freshers’ freebies are mostly junk

Free pizza? That’s about as good as the Freshers’ freebies get, I’m afraid. You’ll get bags of leaflets and free pens with company branding on, leaving you with a pile of junk. But, hey, it’s free and you’re a student on a tight budget now. You’ll take what you can get!
