Matilda has been one of our favourite rebellious students since she hit our screens in 1996, but now she is back for more. That has everyone asking, when is Matilda the Musical on Netflix?

In line with the 2010 stage musical written by Dennis Kelly, with songs by Tim Minchin, this new film will include songs such as ‘Revolting Children’ and ‘When I Grow Up’.

What Is Matilda The Musical?

Directed by Matthew Warchus, who also directed the stage musical in 2013, this film follows suit with the plot of the previous film.

Matilda the Musical tells the story of an extraordinary girl, with a vivid imagination, who dares to take a stand to change her story with miraculous results.’

The movie will be released in UK cinemas on 25 November 2022. It will then be airing in America and internationally on 9 December 2022. If you’re wondering when will Matilda be on Netflix, they’ve come up with the perfect date: Christmas Day 2022.

Who Is In The Matilda Cast?

Thirteen-year-old Alisha Weir is set to play the title character. She made her film debut in 2018, aged just nine, in Don’t Leave Home. Weir then went on to play Laura for several episodes in the 2019 series Darklands. 

When talking to WhatsOnStage about her thoughts on the original Matilda stage show, she said ‘I think there is a big difference. But I think I loved how all the characters were portrayed in a different way. And I loved seeing how different it was from our version.’

Comedian Sindhu Vee, plays Mrs Phelps, the librarian, and told WhatsOnStage, ‘When I grow up, I wanna be as focused an actress as Alisha Weir!’

British legend Emma Thompson is playing the terrifying headmistress Agatha Trunchbull. The trailer shows Thompson with many facial prosthetics in order to really portray the character.

Coming off playing an African warrior in The Woman King Lashana Lynch is turning a corner in order to play the kind-hearted and warm Miss Honey.


Other cast members include Stephen Graham (Help), Andres Risenborough (Venus), Lauren Alexandra (Death On The Nile), Carl Spencer (Rocketman) and Katherine Kingsley (The Secret).
