Which Universities Are Striking? More Dates Confirmed For 2023

Strikes across the sectors that dominated the end of 2022 are continuing into 2023. The University and College Union (UCU) has confirmed more strike days for university staff in February and March, affecting 150 universities. Industrial action is being taken over fair pay, working conditions and pensions. Students who attend UCU universities will need to know which universities are striking.

Days of industrial action for university staff will continue into the next couple of months. Having found no reasonable solution to their demands, the UCU say the following strikes will be the “biggest series of strikes ever to hit UK university campuses.” Over 70,000 staff members plan to take industrial action if the meeting with the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) is unsuccessful today.

When Are Universities Striking In 2023?

The UCU has confirmed the following days that university strikes are planned to take place across seven weeks.

• Wednesday 1 February
• Thursday 9 and Friday 10 February.
• Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15, and Thursday 16 February.
• Tuesday 21, Wednesday 22, and Thursday 23 February.
• Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 February.
• Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 March.
• Thursday 16 and Friday 17 March.
• Monday 20, Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 23 March.

Strike days can be cancelled all the way up to the day of the strike itself. If the UCU and UCEA come to an agreement then the university strikes won’t take place.

Disruption to universities is expected, however, no closures have been planned or announced yet.
