The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards aired on September 12, 2022. With a stellar list of nominees and A-listers galore, this was a night of glitz and glam.

The Emmy Awards occur annually and are a recognition of American primetime television shows.

Of course, this is a night to celebrate the actors, directors, producers and everyone who creates the shows nominated.

But, aside from that, people are always interested to see who will be hosting the ceremony. From comedians to A-list actors, singers and musical theatre performers, anyone and everyone has hosted.

You can see every host listed here, but below are some of the more notable ones.

Who Are Notable Emmy Award Hosts?

The host of the first ever Emmy Awards was actor, songwriter and personality Walter O’Keefe in January 1949.

Standing as the first woman to do so, in 1952, actress and comedian Lucille Ball hosted the awards alongside Desi Arnaz.

Dick Van Dyke hosted the awards in 1968 and brought all the charm and humour everyone expected from him. He shared the role with singer Frank Sinatra, and maybe, just maybe, Van Dyke overshadowed the legend.

Alan Alda hosted the awards in 1978. Whilst he didn’t make waves in his hosting, the following year he definitely stuck in people’s minds. He won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy for M*A*S*H and proceeded to cartwheel towards the stage.

In 1983, the Emmy Award’s were treated to a powerhouse duo for hosts. On paper, comedians Eddie Murphy and Joan Rivers shouldn’t work. But, together, they made the show flow seamlessly with killer jokes only these two could pull off. They truly were the duo we didn’t know we needed.

Neil Patrick Harris is a jack of all trades within the showbusiness industry and he proved it when he hosted the show in 2009. Whilst thw show overall in that year garnered negative reviews, Patrick Harris earnt the most viewers of the Emmy Awards in previous decade, so he must’ve done something right.

On only four occassions has the Emmy Awards had no official host. The first time it happened was in 1975, then 1998, followed by 2003 and finally in 2019.

Hosting the awards three times are five well-established names in the world of television. The list includes Joey Bishop, Ellen DeGeneres, John Forsythe, Jimmy Kimmel and Danny Thomas.

Finally, there are nine people who have managed to bag a second time hosting. These men are Steve Allen, Desi Arnaz, Dennis Miller, Bill Cosby, Neil Patrick Harris, Art Linkletter, Conan O’Brien, Ryan Seacrest and Garry Shandling.
