Last Saturday the United Kingdom finally gained some points in the Eurovision Song Contest, placing second in the overall competition, with Ukraine coming first. This success was due to musician Sam Ryder. His song, ‘Spaceman’, was extremely well received by the public, but who is he?
Who is Sam Ryder?
Sam Ryder is a 33-year-old songwriter and became a prominent social media star through TikTok during the first Covid lockdown.
He started to pursue his solo career in 2016, and in 2017 opened up a vegan juice bar in Essex with his partner Lois.
Following the shutdown of this venture in 2019, he went to TikTok and started to perform at different events such as club nights and weddings.
After catching the attention of some A-list stars such as Justin Bieber, Elton John and Sia, he was the most followed UK artist on the whole of the TikTok app.
This led to a record deal with Parlophone, and his debut EP ‘The Sun’s Gonna Rise’ received over 100 million streams worldwide.
Eurovision Success!
Graham Norton who hosts Eurovision every year for UK audiences, stated that Ryder truly was one of the nicest contestants he had ever met, which further increased his popularity.
With a total of 466 points, Ryder became the highest-scoring contestant for the United Kingdom in Eurovision history, while his second-place is the UK’s best result since 1998.
