Every university has societies, and there is a society for pretty much any hobby, interest or course ever. Usually during Freshers Week, a societies fair will be held. You’ll get the chance to check out lots of different ones and see what they entail. There are so many reasons why societies are great to join, and here are just a few.
Making Friends
Freshers Week can be a really tough experience if you’re struggling to make some friends. However, joining a society will give you the chance to meet some great new people. If you’re joining a society based on an interest, you’ll meet people exactly like you.
Societies often hold weekly events, meaning you’ll have some time to socialise with new people. Joining one means that you will have a constant friendship group that you’ll regularly see. It is a great chance to mingle with new people at university. It also gives you a break from your flatmates or course mates to socialise.
A Society Will Keep You Active and Busy
Joining a society means you will be kept active either mentally or physically. Or both! There are plenty of sports ones to join if you play a sport and want to keep it up at uni. Having that free time to keep active will mean you’re kept busy at university doing the things you love.
If you’re not joining a sports-based one, you’ll still be keeping busy. Often during idle time, that’s when students start to feel slightly homesick. But, if you’re keeping busy and going to society events, you might not feel so homesick. Of course, it’s important to have enough balance in keeping busy and relaxing. But, keeping your mind and body active and busy will keep your mental health well at university.
Course Help
Most, if not all, university courses have a society alongside it. This can be really handy. Not only are you making friends on your course whose paths you might not have crossed. You can also discuss anything from your course that you might be stuck on.
A course-based society can be really helpful if you’re struggling with adapting to the university workload. It can provide you a safe check-in amongst friends if you’re finding an assignment particularly hard, or don’t completely understand everything.
