The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) never rests. Every year we are introduced to another superhero or villain to add to the ever-growing world.
This year is no different as we have seen Ms Marvel come to life. The final episode of the six-part series is available on Disney+ from 13 July 2022.
If you are yet to watch this series, here are a few reasons why it should definitley be on your watch list.
A groundbreaking superhero
Ms Marvel is the first Muslim superhero within the MCU.
The show has been praised for its accurate portrayal of the Pakistani-American experience. The series also shines a positive light on Kamala Khan’s (Ms Marvel) South Asian background and religion.
Kamala Khan, played by Pakistani-Canadian actress Iman Vellani, is trying to find her way by juggling two very different cultures. If this isn’t enough, she also develops superpowers, which she also now has to figure out.
Introducing new actors
All to often, major new shows are spearheaded by already established names within Hollywood. Whilst this is great for fans of these actors, it does seem to gatekeep the industry and doesn’t allow for new, upcoming actors to get their chance.
Ms Marvel is different in this respect and has introduced us to many new actors.
Iman Vellani
Iman Vellani plays the title character and at only 19 years-old, this is her first on-screen performance.
Vellani feels very close to her character, Kamala Khan, telling NME, ‘ it felt very close to home for me. I have a very similar family dynamic to Kamala’s. A lot of the words and phrases that are being thrown in the show are being used in my day-to-day.’
Vellani is set to join up with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) in the 2023 Captain Marvel sequel.
Yasmeen Fletcher
Nakia Bahadir, one of Kamala’s friends is portrayed by 19 year-old Yasmeen Fletcher.
When asked about her feelings when playing Nakia by CBR, Fletcher said ‘I’m so grateful and so honored to be here and to be playing such strong and empowered character who I truly wish I had to look up to on-screen while I was growing up.’
Other notable cast members
Kamala’s best friend, Bruno is played by Matt Lintz. He is best known for his role as Henry on The Walking Dead.
Fawad Khan, who plays Hassan, is a Pakistani actor best known for his role on sitcom Jutt and Bond.
Aramis Knight plays Kareem and appeared in te 2013 adaption of Ender’s Game.
Soundtrack
In keeping with MCU films, Ms Marvel is elevated by the music that is used throughout the show. Kamala Khan is an energetic and creative girl, which is mirrored in the series’ soundtrack.
Standout tunes come from the likes of The Weeknd and Riz Ahmed.
The show also does well to incorporate South Asian classic songs from artists like Nahid Akhtar, S.P. Balasubramaniam and Aaryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam.
