Wordle is the newest obsession to take the internet by storm, and it seems as though everyone is playing the online word game as I have found that my Twitter feed, text messages, and real-life conversations are all filled with talk over those frustrating grey squares.
Part of Wordle’s charm is the fact that there is only one puzzle a day and it is the same for everyone across the world. This was a conscious choice for Wordle’s creator Josh Wardle who explained that he wanted the game to feel like a croissant, a ‘delightful snack’ that is enjoyed occasionally. If they are enjoyed too often ‘they lose their charm.’
However, this has led to fans of the game seeking out new challenges to test their word skills. We have put together a list of our favourite ones, which any fans of Wordle should definitely try out.
Words With Friends
Words With Friends is essentially a digital version of scrabble. As it says in the title, you can play this game against friends from all over the world. But, if you don’t have anyone willing to play with you, don’t worry. There are plenty of players on the app that you can challenge to a game.
You and your challenger will take it in turns to play a word, meaning that, if they don’t respond quickly, games can last for days or even weeks! It is a brilliant way to stay in touch with people if you want to do something other than the usual FaceTime call, and can connect you to loved ones who are just as passionate about words as you are.
Word Master
Very similar to Wordle, this game gives you six tries to guess a five-letter word. It gives you grey, yellow, and green blocks to help with your guesses the same way Wordle does. But the perk is that there are unlimited games, meaning you don’t have to wait 24 hours for the next word to be released. You can find Word Master on any browser.
Wordscapes
Wordscapes is available to download on the App Store and Play Store and is best described as a mix between Boggle (remember that game?) and a crossword puzzle, making it the ultimate word challenge. You are given a bank of letters with a crossword you have to complete. You make the words with the letters in your bank and fill out the grid with them. Your prize after every completed puzzle is a nice landscape picture.
TypeShift
TypeShift is pretty similar to Wordle but requires a lot more focus and dedication. Instead of trying to guess one word, you are given a set of letters which you can slide up and down to swap out whatever letter is in that specific part. Once you’ve created a word using a letter, it will change colour, and the aim is to use every letter in a word and have them all change colour.
Digital Trends describes TypeShift as ‘more about solving a puzzle in as many ways as possible with the same pieces rather than trying to solve a single puzzle, like Wordle.’
