Whether you are just starting university, in your final year before graduating, or you’re having that mini breakdown in the second year when you wonder where your degree will get you – this might help. University is a massive thing to accomplish and it’s also a great experience along the way.
But this means that, when you finish, you can feel a little lost in yourself, especially if you move back home and believe you’ve gone back to square one. But you haven’t! This time you have a degree in your pocket and the world is your oyster.
Here are five tips to help you decide what to do now.
Find your passion
It sounds extremely simple, but the first thing to do when deciding what path you want to go down after university is to find your passion. If you love your job, then you’ll never work a day in your life. And that’s the dream. Do you love your course? Or are you just happy to have the degree? Find which route you want to take. Either way, you have a degree now and that will open many more doors.
Mind-map your ideas
Again, mind mapping sounds simple, right? And it is. Note down everything you love, what you want to do, and where you want to go. See if you find links between the things you love and your goals. Where do you see yourself in the future? What kind of lifestyle do you want to have? Mind-map it all and look at the bigger picture in front of you.

Network
You’ve probably been told to do this lots throughout university via Linkedin depending on your course. But Linkedin and social media might become your new best friends after graduating from university. Search for people in your intended line of work and contact them to see how they made their way into their roles. You never know who you’ll meet on Linkedin and a lot of people are more than happy to help.
You can sign up to Linkedin here.
Consider all of your options
Remember that you don’t have to jump straight into a job after university. You could travel for a bit, study another course, volunteer, or work at home for a while. There are so many opportunities available that, if you can, you should discover before panicking and running straight into a full-time job.
Relax
You don’t have to know exactly what you want to do right now. University is a full-on experience and it’s not a bad thing if you think you actually just need a bit of a break before being thrown into the ‘real world’. Take some time out. Recharge. And then get back into it.
So if you’re at this point of potential panic in your life and you’re feeling a little lost, don’t worry!
You have plenty of time to decide what the future holds – and the unknown is the best part.
