The Matilda remake is officially coming to our cinema screens in December and, as a huge Matilda fan, I cannot begin to explain how excited I am! However, as somebody who has watched the original Mara Wilson version about one hundred times (yes, it really is one of my all-time favourites) the 1996 movie will always be my favourite. With this in mind, let’s look back on some of the best moments from the OG movie!
The Very Fact That Mara Wilson Played Matilda
Mara Wilson was born for the role of Matilda, I’m sure of it. The child star was iconic and really brought the character to life. I’m sure when Roald Dahl wrote the book, he envisaged somebody exactly like Mara being Matilda.
The Hilarious Moment Matilda Bleached Harry Wormwood’s Hair
Harry Wormwood certainly deserved everything he had coming to him. There never was a man so vain as Matilda’s dad, receiving a taste of his own medicine as that “shampoo” he was using turned his hair an awful shade of blonde. Not even Danny Devito could pull off that hair style, so much that he had to cover it with a hat…
Yes, THAT Hat!
Matilda actually superglued Harry’s hat to his head with this being the moment responsible for one of the most iconic images of Matilda of all time. If Mr and Mrs Wormwood hadn’t had made a big song and dance about Harry’s hat, pulling it off in the Ritz, then that cream pie would never have landed perfectly in front of Matilda. We have this moment to thank for that iconic image!
Bruce Bogtrotter Having To Eat Chocolate Cake In Front Of The Whole School
Eating free chocolate cake is probably your idea of Heaven but perhaps not when you are forced to eat a WHOLE cake in front of your WHOLE school… and they can’t go home until you’ve eaten every last crumb. Bruce Bogtrotter didn’t get let off lightly with this one and now we all can’t look at chocolate cake the same way again.
Miss Trunchbull Being Terrified Of Newts
Miss Trunchbull was an athlete who wasn’t afraid of anything… except from newts! Matilda and her classmates put a newt in a jug of water which happened to be sipped out of by their headmistress herself. It turned out that newts and Agatha Trunchbull do not go together well but it made for some hilarious scenes.
That Terrifying Escape From Agatha’s House
We all feared for both Matilda’s and Miss Honey’s lives with this one. Agatha’s house was no joke and the escape was next level terrifying. Thank goodness Matilda’s powers allowed her to lift herself up onto the underneath of the table, away from sight because the alternative isn’t worth thinking about.
Magnus “Returning” From The Dead
When it was revealed that Agatha killed Miss Honey’s dad, Magnus, I’m sure we were all shocked. However, Matilda got her revenge in that ghostly scene which saw “Magnus” write a message using the chalk in the classroom. This sure was enough to scare Agatha off for good!
Miss Honey Adoption Of Matilda
Miss Honey was always a better motherly figure for Matilda than her own mother could have ever been (all she cared about was the bingo!) The end of the film was just the best possible outcome for the pair and saw Miss Honey adopt Matilda! Matilda pulling out those adoption papers was an absolute power move, creating a future that she truly deserved.
