Fresh from reprising his role as Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield is set to star in the FX and Disney+ series Under the Banner of Heaven.
The Oscar-nominated actor is taking on the role of detective Jeb Pyre in the highly anticipated series inspired by the true crime bestseller of the same name by Jon Krakauer.

What Is ‘Under The Banner Of Heaven’ About
Under the Banner of Heaven follows the events that led to the 1984 murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty – played Daisy Edgar-Jones – and her baby daughter in a suburb in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah.
The Disney+ synopsis of the series reads: ‘As Detective Jeb Pyre investigates events that transpired within the Lafferty family, he uncovers buried truths about the origins of the LDS religion and the violent consequences of unyielding faith.
‘What Jeb, a devout Mormon, unearths leads him to question his own faith.’
The seven episode limited series also stars Sam Worthington, Denise Gough, Wyatt Russell, Billy Howle, Gil Birmingham, Adelaide Clemens, Rory Culkin, Seth Numrich, Chloe Pirrie and Sandra Seacat.
There’s Nothing Garfield Can’t Do
The role is just another example of the versatility of the 38-year-old actor who not only briefly reprised his role as Spider-Man in Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, also took on the role as Jonathan Larson in the autobiographical musical, Tick…Tick…BOOM!.
Garfield’s performance as the Rent writer in Tick…Tick…BOOM! landed him a nomination for ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ at the 2022 Academy Awards.
However, you can’t expect to see an Amazing Spider-Man full revival as when he was speaking to Variety about any upcoming plans to return as the web-slinger, Garfield said: ‘No plans, that’s the truth.’
That was before he fully acknowledged his denial isn’t necessarily trustworthy after saying he wasn’t going to be Spider-Man: No Way Home.
‘Everyone’s gonna call me a liar for the rest of my life,’ he added, ‘I’m the boy who cried wolf.’
More Thrillers For Daisy
Edgar-Jones is no stranger to thrillers, her new film Fresh is heading to Disney+ on March 18 after being delayed from its original release date of March 4.
Speaking to Graham Norton, on February 25, about the film she said: ‘It’s a hard film to say [something about] because the joy of coming to it having no idea what’s coming… I would say it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted or the easily queasy.’
Disney+ hasn’t yet confirmed the exact release date of Under the Banner of Heaven, but said it will be heading to the UK and Ireland version of the streaming site ‘soon’.
