Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney is tipped to be joining Dakota Johnson in the upcoming Sony Pictures Marvel movie Madame Web.
Last month it was announced 32-year-old Dakota Johnson was in talks to star as the lead in Sony’s upcoming Madame Web, a film scripted by Lost In Space writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless with S.J. Clarkson aboard to direct.
What we know about Madame Web?
According to the Marvel comics, Madame Web is an elderly woman with a long-term neuromuscular disease called myasthenia gravis. In order to survive, she is connected to a life-support system resembling the web of a spider, earning her the nickname of Madame Web.
Although in the comics due to her age and medical condition the titular character doesn’t actually get down and dirty with the villains like the other spider-based heroes. However, given they’ve got the Fifty Shades of Grey star for the role it seems as if – like with other upcoming Marvel projects – Johnson may be going in a different direction with the character.
The Spider-Man spin off will be made by Sony Pictures – like the successful Venom movies, starring Tom Hardy – rather than Disney, like the Tom Holland MCU films.
Where Does Sydney Sweeney Fit In?
According to Deadline, sources have said the 24-year-old actor will join Johnson in the film which is said to begin filming this year.
One thing that is completely up in the air is what role Sweeney will take on. The actor has shown impressive range in the past with her roles in The White Lotus and The Voyeurs, of course, not forgetting her rise to fame for an outstanding and commended performance – along side another Spider-Man actor, Zendaya – in Euphoria.
Deadline sources continued to say Sweeney had been ‘weighing several offers in recent weeks, but the opportunity to join Johnson in what would be the first female-centric film in this universe was too good to pass up’.
Fans Guess The Character
Many fans have taken to Twitter with guesses to which role Sweeney will take on. Many people think she might be, yet another version of, Gwen Stacey/Spider-Gwen.
The character last made an appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise – with Andrew Garfield – played by Emma Stone.
