Lady Chatterley’s Lover is being made into a movie for the fifth time, and here’s all you need to know about Netflix’s upcoming adaptation.
Winter is set to get a whole lot hotter as the new film adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, based on D.H. Lawrence’s novel of the same name, hits the streaming site on December 2.
Netflix’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover
Directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (The Mustang), the movie stars The Crown’s Emma Corrin as Lady Constance Chatterley, whose happy marriage to Sir Clifford Chatterley (Matthew Duckett) soon turns sour when he returns wounded and scarred from World War I.
No longer able to walk, Clifford treats his wife as a nursemaid, leaving her more lonely than she thought possible.
For a while, Constance’s only companion is housekeeper Mrs Bolton (Joely Richardson). However, things change when she meets Oliver Mellors (Jack O’Connell), the new gamekeeper for the couple’s English estate.
What starts as a little bit of flirtation between the two turns into a passionate and physical relationship that threatens to destroy Constance’s whole life as she must make a decision: follow her heart or return to her husband and endure what Edwardian society expects of her.
History of Lady Chatterley’s Lover
Lady Chatterley’s Lover is the last novel by English author D. H. Lawrence, which was first published privately in 1928, in Italy, and in 1929, in France, but it was famously banned at the time of its wide 1959 publication in part because of its graphic sex scenes.
In the UK Penguin Books was even taken to court under the Obscene Publications Act 1959 for publishing the book in 1960
The book has been made into four previous movies the first in 1955, one in 1981, 2007 and finally the most recent in 2015 – making this adaptation the fifth version of the movie.
One of the most famous adaptations was Ken Russell’s 1993 TV series adaptation which starred Joely Richardson as Constance and Sean Bean as Oliver Mellors. At the time the show had an audience of 12 million for the BBC.
This fifth adaptation will not only drop on Netflix in December but will also debut in select theaters in November.
