Cultural Things For Students To Do In Edinburgh

Scotland’s capital city is famed for its medieval and Georgian architecture, its hilly terrain, and of course, the landmark Edinburgh Castle. If you’re planning a trip to Edinburgh already or just considering it, you would be in for a treat. Here are some cultural things for students to do in Edinburgh.

The Royal Botanic Garden

The Royal Botanic Garden dates back over 350 years and spans 70 acres of landscape. This landscape includes an arboretum, rock gardens, woodland gardens, a collection of rhododendrons and sections dedicated to different biomes across the world, such as Japan, Chile, Australia and South Africa. The garden also has library and archive collections that include over 3000 rare and special books. If that wasn’t enough to draw you in, the RBGE also has some fantastic views.

Camera Obscura and World of Illusions

This is a museum full of things that are more than meet the eye. With over 100 different interactive exhibits, you can test which illusions you can see through and which will trick your brain. These illusions fill up five floors, so you’re not likely to run out of things to do. Plus, the museum includes a rooftop terrace with 360 degree views of the city.

Arthur’s Seat

Arthur’s Seat is a jagged hill that rises over Edinburgh that was once a volcano. If you’re down for a bit of a workout, climbing it is a great way to get some fresh air and a great view of the city. For an easier walk, go along the Salisbury Crags. For more of a challenge, you can climb to Arthur’s Seat. This hike is roughly 4km long and takes about an hour and a half.

Craigmillar Castle

A slightly less popular alternative to Edinburgh Castle, Craigmillar Castle is located about 3 miles from the city centre. Once a safe haven for Mary, Queen of Scots, Craigmillar is one of the best preserved castles in Scotland. With a climbable tower and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore, Edinburgh’s ‘other’ castle is definitely worth a visit.

Festival Theatre

What better way to complete your trip than with a performance at Edinburgh’s premier theatre site? Festival offers performances of all kinds from dance, musicals, comedy and theatre, so there’s something for everyone. The venue also has quite a bit of history, as it has been used as a performance space since 1830.

There are plenty of cultural things for students to do in Edinburgh, but we think these should definitely be on your list.
