Plans have been confirmed for new student housing to be built in Brighton. The accommodation, while will be located near one of the University of Brighton campuses on Lewes Road, will supply 566 rooms for students. In total, the scheme will cost £150 million to build. The development organisation behind the planning for the new housing blocks is Cathedral Advisory LLP.

The new blocks will stand up to 15 storeys high and replace existing housing blocks. Those flats, which were built in the 1990s, currently provide room for 163 students. Each of the new blocks will have amenities such as gyms, wellbeing studios, and cafes alongside the housing.

Planning for the new flats has been ongoing for two years. Residents raised concerns about the loss of a listed flint wall at the site, as well as the adjacent Georgian manor house, which is set to be converted into an event space and pub. Part of the plans include demolition to areas of the site in order to install a ground source heat pump. There have also been concerns regarding the height of the buildings. However, the Brighton And Hove City Council Planning Committee has approved the plans.

Others believe the development will help staunch the student housing shortage, as well as provide additional public green space to the area, which is especially helpful in such a high-density area.

Richard Upton, Cathedral Chief Executive, said: ‘After two years of careful design and consultation, I would like to thank the community groups, ward councillors and hundreds of people who participated in our consultations and meetings.

‘We have heard a lot of local support for our proposals which will open up the listed gardens and buildings for everyone to enjoy.

‘Brighton has a shortfall of over 4,000 student bedrooms which is taking too many affordable homes away from families.

‘These proposals will go some way to addressing that shortfall, putting student bedrooms in the heart of a university campus rather than taking land in residential and commercial areas. In turn this will lead to a release of affordable family homes in the city.’

In addition, the historic site on the property, Moulsecoombe Place will be involved in the redevelopment. The grade II listed house will be linked to a nearby tithe barn with an extension. The grounds outside the house will be converted into a public park.
