If there’s one thing TikTok is great for, it’s starting a new viral trend and the latest is the butter board, the new budget party food that could take over from cheese.
The video-sharing app has made trends out of songs, dances, water bottles and even instant noodles, but now it’s all about spreading out some butter and making it look absolutely stunning.
Butter Board Trend
Although the trend has now been going strong for a while – and you may have seen numerous tasty versions of it on TikTok – it was all said to be started by the American-based recipe developer Justine Doiron.
In her video where she explains butter boards – which now has over 1 million likes, 122,000 shares, 6,000 comments and over 8.4 million views – she explains it was coined by chef Joshua McFadden and she just “loves” the concept and said she wants to make butter boards the next charcuterie board.
Justine makes it look incredibly easy as she adds butter, salt, lemon zest, edible flowers, herbs and a dash of honey.
It’s proven to be an excellent trend as the hashtag “#butterboard’ has had over 172 million views on TikTok as people have made their own version showing it’s not all about cheese. This trend could be the latest budget hack for parties as it could prove to be more cost-effective than purchasing a selection of cheeses, crackers, and biscuits.
How to make a butter board
Making a butter board may look difficult when you see all the finished products on TikTok, but it’s actually pretty simple.
- Grab your board of choice and a palette knife, then smear the butter of your choice (as expensive or as cheap as you like) making sure the butter is cool, but not hard.
- Once it’s spread over the board, add flaky salt, some black pepper, and maybe even some lemon zest and chilli flakes.
- Next, you can layer up the toppings with herbs, maybe some onions, capers, olives etc and you could always go all out and add some edible flowers like Justine.
- Finally, serve it with some warm bread of your choice and let the party dig in.
This can be made vegan and gluten free too meaning all your guests can easily be accommodated for. And if butter isn’t your thing you could substitute it for cream cheese, or make it sweet with peanut butter or chocolate spreads.
