After the success of her latest novel, Malibu Rising, Taylor Jenkins Reid is back with an aptly named new book, Carrie Soto is Back.
Malibu Rising debuted in 2021 and swiftly became a bestseller. Reid’s texts have reached such heights before thanks to the success of her LGBTQ+ historical fiction novel, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. So, who is Carrie Soto? And why is she back?

Well, Carrie Soto is due back on 30 August, as that is the release date of the book. For Taylor Jenkins Reid fans, the name Carrie Soto may be familiar. Her name first appears in the first chapter of her previous novel, Malibu Rising. Carrie is the woman that Nina Riva’s husband has an affair with. Nina being the daughter of Mick Riva, one of Evelyn Hugo’s seven husbands. The Taylor Jenkins Reid universe is officially expanding.
So what is Carrie Soto all about?
Carrie Soto, if Malibu Rising is anything to go by, is a tennis player in the 1980s. According to the preview of the book, Carrie is one of the best tennis players in the world. Her father is her coach, and she has won 20 Slam titles, but she’s made the decision to retire. By the sounds of things, she still watches tennis. At the 1994 US Open, her record is broken.
In true Reid style, the strong female lead of Carrie Soto decides to return to the sport and end her retirement. The media don’t take to Soto’s return too well, but she is strong. However, she ends up training with Bowe Huntley, and it’s likely that the pair have a previous romantic history. For one last season, Carrie Soto really is back.
In regard to the plot, that’s all we know at the moment. But, with the typical Reid tropes of a loveable, yet fierce heroine and a perfect mix of romance and wider issues, it may just be her best work yet.
