Once you’ve done it for your first year, you might think all the hard work to get your maintenance loan and more is done. We answer ‘Do you have to apply for student finance every year’? after students have been left confused.
Now the academic year is done and you’ve completed your first year at university, there’s plenty of reason to celebrate. However, that doesn’t mean you should completely forget about September.
You would have sorted out your student finance for your first year, but you might think that it covers the whole of your course.
We take a look at if that’s the case.
Do You Have To Apply For Student Finance Every Year?
Yes, you have to reapply for student finance each year you’re in higher education. This means for every year you’re an undergraduate and if you continue on to a postgraduate course.
This is because personal circumstances can change and therefore you may be entitled to more or less money than you were before.
Fortunately, the process for continuing students is quicker than if you’re doing it for the first time. Plus, the time taken to process your application is typically much faster too. This is because it’s unlikely you would have changed university or course.
If you have done the above, then you may need to apply for student fincance from the beginning. Just be aware that SFE only provide funding for four years for an undergraduate.
If you’re unsure on how to go through the process, then here’s how to apply for student finance.

The Student Finance Deadline For 2023/2024 Has Passed
The deadline for both first-time and continuing students has now passed for those attending university in the coming September.
Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean you won’t have any money for the next year if you haven’t sorted it.
Here’s what to do if you missed the SFE deadline for 2023/2024.
The key is to apply as soon as possible. Even if you don’t have all of your maintenance loan and funding in place from the beginning of September, SFE will provide you with sufficient money to see you through. Once your application has been processed, you’ll get the full amount.
SFE get thousands of applications each year, so remember to get it in nice and early next time to save you the worry. Typically, it opens in February of each year, with it being a little later for returning students.
