Emma Mackey is switching life at Moordale Secondary School to the Yorkshire Dales to star in the upcoming Emily Brontë biopic.
Warner Bros UK dropped the trailer for Emily showing the Sex Education star in the role and confirming the movie would be hitting cinemas on October 14.
Emma Mackey Becomes Emily
She rose to success thanks to her main role in Netflix’s Sex Education as the spunky and smart Maeve Wiley. But now, Mackey will star in Emily.
The movie will hit the big screen on 14 October 2022, perfect timing for a moody-looking film to be screened bang in the middle of autumn.
Emily follows the life of Emily Brontë and the inspiration behind her infamous novel, Wuthering Heights. The film will draw on entirely historical individuals, with no fictitious characters. Viewers will meet Emily, her sisters Charlotte and Anne, their brother Branwell, and William Weightman.
Weightman will fulfil the role in the film as Emily’s potential love interest. But in real life, all three of the Brontë sisters fell slightly in love with him. He worked as an assistant to their father in the rectory so spent a lot of time with the women. He even gave all three of them Valentines Day cards.
But he never married either of them, dying at the age of 26 from cholera. It’s likely that the film will document his death, as well as Branwell’s. Branwell died just three months before Emily.
The Brontë family lived an infamously miserable life. They all died relatively young with very little family surrounding them.
Emma Mackey’s Road to Stardom
The stars of Sex Education careers seem to be flying as Mackey herself has plenty of upcoming projects.
She’ll be starring in Eiffel, a historical drama about the building of the Eiffel Tower. Alongside this, she and fellow Sex Education star, Ncuti Gatwa, will also be in the star-studded Greta Gerwig movie Barbie.
Gatwa was also recently announced as the new Doctor in Doctor Who. This is just the beginning for this new generation of talent.
