Fans have taken to Twitter to celebrate One Direction’s 12 year anniversary with a series of memes and memories dedicated to the former boyband.

For the ‘Directioner’ fandom, it must seem like only yesterday the five British boys took the world by storm in when they were first formed on July 23, 2010, now 12 years later fans are still celebrating the five-piece that have since gone their own way.

One Direction rise to fame

The world first heard of One Direction when five youngsters – Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson – individually entered the British singing competition X Factor during the seventh season of the show in 2010.

Although Matt Cardle went on to win the series, under the mentorship of Louis Walsh the band was formed and the boys came in third place.

In 2011 the band released their debut album, Up All Night, and their first single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ – which became an instant hit and international success. The song reached number one on the UK Singles Chart after becoming the most pre-ordered Sony Music Entertainment single in history, according to Digital Spy.

The band had three more studio albums, four world tours and two all-stadium tours before Malik made his departure from the group to pursue a solo career.

The group had one last studio album and world tour before deciding to split and all pursue solo careers in 2016. Since then each member has experienced different levels of success.

One Direction 12 year anniversary

Although the boys have been separated for the last eight years, and none of them has publicly expressed any messages about the anniversary of the groups formation, ‘Directioners’ always maintain their love for the group.

Now on the band’s 12th anniversary #12yearsofonedirection is trending and fans have taken to Twitter to share memes and memories and express how much they miss the band.
