How To Clean Out Your Cosmetics

If you wear makeup, it’s easy for your cosmetics to become disorganized. Not only that, but product can spill or leak and become something of a mess. However, it can be a pain to have to dig through your entire bag or container of makeup to find the item you need.

Sorting through everything can be overwhelming, but if you break it up into smaller steps, you may find that it’s not as difficult as it looks from the outset. Plus, you’ll be left with a makeup bag that is clean and tidy. So, here is how to clean out your cosmetics.

Empty Everything Out

You may be tempted to rearrange items and sort through them as they are, but try to resist this impulse. This method of cleaning can be useful in a hurry, but you’re often still left with items that you don’t use. Instead, start by emptying everything out onto a table, desk or counter. That way, you have to make the conscious decision to put back everything you want to keep.

Throw Away Anything Expired

Did you know that makeup can expire? Many people don’t realize that many cosmetics are only good for a certain period of time. As you sort through your items, check to see if it has an expiration date on it. As a general rule, items like eyeliners and mascaras are usually good for about six months, and foundations and concealers last for about a year. Also, get rid of any items that you simply know you won’t use.

Clean Your Brushes

How long has it been since you’ve cleaned your makeup brushes? Most of us are guilty of leaving it too long. If you wear makeup regularly or semi-regularly, it’s a good idea to clean them every week. You can use a product designed for cleaning brushes, or give them a soak in water with dish soap (just be sure to only soak the bristles).

Sort Into Categories

Once everything is clean and you’ve gotten rid of any products you don’t want to keep, the next step in how to clean out your cosmetics is to sort everything into categories. You might sort by type of product, for example keeping your lipsticks together and your eyeshadows together. Or, you might choose to separate the products you use most often from the ones you use only occasionally.

Put Everything Back

Then, replace your cosmetics back into their container. If you don’t already have them, dividers can be a great way to keep things organised.
