Unless you have been living under a rock, you will have seen all the glitz, glamour and, as always, drama surrounding the Met Gala this year.
From Blake Lively’s show stopping outfit change, to Sebastian Stan’s neon pink tracksuit, the event was certainly not short of interesting outfits, even if not all of them fit the ‘Gilded Glamour’ theme.
However, one particular outfit caused a lot of controversy. Kim Kardashian attended the notorious fashion event wearing Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress when she sang happy birthday to JFK. This sparkly, nude dress is possibly the most famous outfit to ever grace the Gala and many people are arguing that Kim K is the perfect person to wear it. It’s a beautiful dress and she looked amazing in it.
Diet controversy
But it’s not the dress that’s the issue. On the red carpet, Kim boasted that she lost 16 pounds in three weeks to fit into it. She went into detail about how she cut out all sugar and carbs and wore a sauna suit two days a week. This may seem like a harmless publicity stunt, as she talked about it so casually. However, for those with disordered eating, this is extremely harmful. Especially since Kim’s fan base is made up of predominantly young women, it’s not the best idea to go on a red carpet and say you hardly ate for three weeks. It’s quite scary that this is being praised in 2022.
As a public figure, she has the chance to influence people and work to eliminate diet culture, which we are yet to see.
Riverdale star, Lili Reinhart, spoke out about the incident on her Instagram story: “So wrong. So f***ed on 100’s of levels. To openly admit to starving yourself for the sake of the Met Gala. When you knew very well that millions of young men and women are looking up to you and listening to your every word.”
She also said that Kim’s ignorance is other-worldly and disgusting.”
Whether Kim meant to or not, this moment has sparked a lot of heated conversation. Maybe it was just an innocent Met Gala stunt, maybe it has caused more problems than she expected. However it has definitely left people talking.
