Mae Martin seems to be the person of the hour and they have made it all the way to Netflix. After their massive success on Feel Good, which they wrote and starred in, appearing on season 15 of Taskmaster and even releasing a young adult book, it seems they are unstoppable. Now, Martin’s new comedy special has aired and it has fans rallying around them like never before.
Who Is Mae Martin?
Mae Martin is a comedian, actor and writer from Canada. They have since moved to London and lived there for the past decade. Aged 16, Martin was nominated for the Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award, for which they were the youngest ever nominee. They went on to win two Canadian Screen Awards for Best Writing for their Baroness von Sketch Show.
After moving to London, Martin performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, appeared on The Now Show and went on to co-host GrownUpLand.
In 2020, Martin co-wrote Feel Good which had a semi-autobiographical plot. Martin played a character called Mae who is a recovering addict (something Martin themselves had gone through) who begins to get their life back on track, only to have it railroaded when George comes along.
Netflix Comedy Special
Their newest comedy special, Sap, has recently been released on Netflix and fans are loving it. The show sees Martin detail how the world has since gone mad after the global pandemic but, how their parents are just as weird as they have always been.
From measuring the height of the tallest ever moose, to detailing how Lumiere is the perfect representation of the middle of the gender spectrum, Martin talks about all the weird and wonderful things of life.
Fans have called this show poignant and original which seems to be Martin’s USP. In Sap, they hilariously explain how moments in life are like snow globes of time, which we simply show other people in conversation.
