Last week, the final episode of Moon Knight dropped on Disney Plus and, now it’s all wrapped up, I have some thoughts.
*SPOILERS BELOW*
I’ve been a Marvel fan ever since 2008 when my dad went ‘Iron Man? I used to read those comics…’ Fast forward fourteen years and countless films and shows later, Moon Knight happened, and, like a lot of fans, I think it’s one of Marvel’s best.
Coming into Moon Knight, I didn’t know much about the character, but the trailer really gripped me. I was intrigued to see how they handled Marc’s DID and I’m a sucker for mythology.
I definitely wasn’t disappointed. Oscar Isaac distinctively portrays Marc, Steven and Jake (finally) so that they all feel different and not at all gimmicky or cliche. Steven Grant has my entire heart and the thought that we had lost him in episode five was devastating.
Although the CGI started off a bit, well, noticeable, I found by episode six it had definitely improved so it wasn’t distracting anymore. The fight between Khonshu and Ammit on the Pyramids looked a lot better than in the earlier episodes.
As far as villains go, I found Harrow a lot better than Falcon and The Winter Soldier’s Karli Morgenthau (although that really isn’t difficult) but a far cry from Daredevil’s Kingpin. He could have done with an episode fleshing him out a bit more. Time dedicated to how he gained his following and his time as Khonshu’s avatar would have created a more meaningful villain.
Speaking of Avatars, Layla El-Faouly (May Calamay) as Tawaret’s avatar was so unexpected but so badass. I need more of Layla in the MCU.
My biggest criticism of the series is that it needed more time. That’s not that they didn’t use their short episode count well, particularly episode five which delved into Marc’s traumatic past, but I wanted more time with it. Hopefully it will mean a series two is in the works, hinted at in the post-credit scene where Jake kills Harrow, apparently still an avatar for Khonshu.
Overall, Moon Knight is the best Disney Plus Marvel show in my opinion (it’s no Daredevil, but what is?) and I’m really eager for a second series with, hopefully, a higher episode count.
