One Ingredient Three Ways: Puff Pastry Recipes Perfect For Student Cooking

Add as preferred source on Google

If you are a student, it is likely you wouldn’t ever think to add puff pastry to your shopping list every week. However, I’m here to tell you (as a fellow student myself) that not only is it cheap, but very versatile too. Below are some perfect puff pastry student recipes.

You can pick up a roll of puff pastry for 79p at Lidl, which can make two or more meals depending on how many people you are cooking for. While not making your own pastry might be looked down upon by chefs, as a student the ease of rolling out pastry someone else has made is the most important thing here.

Let’s take a look at three easy dishes you can make with puff pastry and trust me, they tick all the boxes. Simple, cheap, and delicious- what more could you want?

Pastry slices

  1. Roll out the pastry.
  2. You can either make one large slice which you can cut into smaller slices, or you can make smaller slices from the beginning (if you are making smaller ones, split your pastry into several smaller squares then follow the same steps as below).
  3. Fold in around an inch of pastry along the outside of the square to make a border (similar to a pizza crust).
  4. Spread on your base of choice (I would recommend pesto or caramelised onions).
  5. Apply your toppings of choice (tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, and feta are personal favourites)
  6. Cook in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown.

Chicken pie

There are lots of brilliant chicken pie recipes out there but my personal favourite is this Jamie Oliver one.

The entire filling can be made on the stovetop in a pan, then when it’s all cooked up you transfer it into a heat-proof dish and cover with your trusty puff pastry. Roll the sides for thick crusty edges and brush with egg for a golden sheen.

Cook for 20 mins or until golden brown then serve with potatoes, veg, and gravy.

Chocolate twists

  1. Roll out your pastry and cut it into slices around 2-3 inches thick and however long you want your twists to be.
  2. Spread on a layer of chocolate spread onto two strips of pastry.
  3. Put one strip on top of the other, with the chocolate spread sides both facing on top of each other.
  4. Keeping the two strips together, twist them three times and lay it on a tray lined with baking paper.
  5. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes or until golden.
  6. Leave the cool before eating.
