Picking A Graduation Outfit Dos And Don’ts

Add as preferred source on Google

Like many students, my university experience has gone by in a flash. It seems like only last week I was moving into halls for fresher’s week. So, because I want to ignore the fact that I have to actually finish my degree and meet upcoming deadlines to graduate this summer, I’ve compiled a list of how to choose that all-important outfit. Happy shopping!

Be Smart and Sophisticated

If your family are anything like mine, your graduation photos will come second only to your future wedding pictures. So, to celebrate the three (or more) years of hard work, you want some memorable photos you won’t mind being shown to every visitor, relative, and Facebook friend of your proud-as-punch family. Ideally, you’ll want to be looking nothing short of your best. That means something different for everyone, and it doesn’t need to cost a lot of money. Wear a favourite outfit from your wardrobe, or shop for something you really like. Either way, wear it proudly.

Confidence and Comfort Are Key

When picking something you will be wearing all day, and walking across a stage in front of other people, you will want to feel happy and not focused on whether your dress is too long or an annoying shirt top button is too tight on your neck. Sorry Beyonce, but pretty does not need to hurt. Believe it or not, how you style your hair or what you put on under your robes can be both flattering and comfy. To top it off, if you are comfortable, you are more likely to feel confident and hold your head high, which is only right on a day all about marking your achievements.

Heels Aren’t Everything

If you want to wear heeled shoes – go for it! But don’t feel pressure to torture your feet for the sake of an outfit, or because everyone else is wearing them. Of course, trainers are a no-go. But heeled boots, smart flat shoes, brogues or small heels are just as perfect. You do you!

Know Your Robe Colour

Most likely, you will have to rent a robe and hat for the big day, and you will not get to pick it up in advance. So, when signing up for a robe, check what colour detailing will be on it. Typically, they are black with a colour around a hood or neckline that will be different for each university, college, or course, and level of qualification. If you are unsure – ask! Tutors or previous graduates will know from former graduations. Then you can pick a colour to wear to compliment your robe colour. Perfect.
