It’s a sad day for fans of the Resident Evil series as season 2 won’t be happening after Netflix cancelled the show after only one season.
It was announced by Deadline the streaming site has decided to not renew the show after ‘poor viewership numbers’.
Resident Evil Netflix Series
The latest instalment in the long-running franchise focuses on the classic series villain Albert Wesker and spreads across two timelines: one set in 2022, when Wesker (Lance Reddick) and his half-twin daughters Billie (Siena Agudong) and Jade (Tamara Smart), as they move to New Raccoon City.
The second timeline is set in 2036, 14 years after a deadly virus causes a global outbreak focusing on an older Jade (Ella Balinska) as she searches for a cure while evading the Umbrella Corporation.
Without giving too much of the plot away the eight-part series definitely dips into key events of several Resident Evil games.
The cast also includes Adeline Rudolph, Paola Nuñez, Ahad Raza Mir, Connor Gosatti and Turlough Convery.
Andrew Dabb (Supernatural) served as showrunner on Resident Evil and executive produced with Mary Leah Sutton and Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer and Oliver Berben. Constantin CEO Martin Moszkowicz is a producer on the series.
No Resident Evil Season 2
Just six weeks after the show hit the streamer, Netflix has said it will not be renewed for a second series. Deadline reported after the show’s decent premiere, debuting at No. 2 with an OK 72.7 million hours viewed, it didn’t ‘deliver the big Week 2 bump’ raking in 73.3M hours viewed in its second week for a No. 3 finish.
The show dropped out of Netflix’s Top 10 after only three weeks on the streamer and only got a score of 55% from Rotten Tomatoes Critics and 27% from audience scores.
Resident Evil was never going to have an easy ride as it’s premier was sandwiched between the final episodes of Stranger Things season 4 and the launch of The Sandman.
