Growing up in California, Serena held a passion for tennis at a young age, starting playing the sport at just age four. Both Serena and her older sister, Venus were coached by their parents before moving to Florida to attend a tennis academy in which they were able to develop their skills to a more advanced level.

Serena was just fourteen when she played her first professional tennis match at the Bell Challenge in Quebec, in 1995. It was not until 1999, however, that Serena won her first professional singles title – this being the start of her path to reaching that all-important number one spot.

While there have been talks of retirement on the cards for the tennis superstar, Serena is still playing with her most recent sporting appearance at Wimbledon this week.

Serena competed in Wimbledon this week against French tennis player, Harmony Tan. The match was greatly anticipated but failed to provide a win for the American player, who was knocked out of the competition after the first round.

The match however was intense with Serena putting up a good fight but it was 24-year-old Harmony who ended up with all of the glory, with a final score of 7-5. 1-6. 7-6. (7).

It is uncertain whether Serena will play again at Wimbledon in the future or whether this was the last time fans will see her at the much-loved event.
