International Women’s Day is almost upon us, so let’s celebrate! Nowadays, simply reposting a cute picture of your girlfriends with the hashtag doesn’t seem to be doing it. So, here are some of the events that are happening in the UK this International Women’s Day that you can get involved with.

What Is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day is an internationally recognised holiday that celebrates women’s achievements, calls for further change in women’s rights, educates people about equality in today’s society and highlights fundraisers.

The earliest version of this tradition occurred in 1909 in New York City. However, in Germany 1914, International Women’s Day was held on 8 March, which is the date we now recognise as the holiday.

This year’s theme is #EmbraceEquity which encourages us to talk about how equality and equity are not the same and how this can sometimes negatively impact people.
