After the smash hit success of Wordle, developers began creating dozens of related games. One of these was Heardle, a name-that-tune type game where users were challenged to recollect the name and artist of a song based on a short clip of the song’s intro. Spotify purchased the game in July of 2022, but less than a year later it has announced that Heardle will be shutting down. As a result, many daily users of the game are left without a part of their routine. So, here are all the details as Spotify shuts down Heardle.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to say goodbye to Heardle,” Spotify representatives said in a statement.
The game will be unavailable from May 5th, although it has not yet been determined whether it will resurface under different ownership. As a result, players of the game are being encouraged to screencap their scores before this date if they would like to preserve them.
Heardle followed a relatively simple format. Users were given a short micro clip of the beginning of a song, and then given six tries to guess both its artist and its title. While some were dedicated fans of the game, others complained of far too many songs by the same artists, not providing enough variety for the game to be worthwhile.
Spotify’s initial plans for the game involved using it as a way to promote music discovery and rediscovery in its user base. Once the identity of the song has been revealed, the player has the option to open it in the Spotify app, where they can listen, share, or add it to one of their playlists.
When they first bought Heardle, Spotify stated it was “more than a trivia game: It’s also a tool for musical discovery.” In other words, whether players guess the song right or wrong, the answer will show up at the end of the game and allow them to play that song on Spotify and save it to their playlists.
“We are always looking for innovative and playful ways to enhance music discovery and help artists reach new fans. Heardle has proven to be a really fun way to connect millions of fans with songs they know and love and with new songs … and a way to compete with their friends as to who has the best musical knowledge. Since its debut, the game has quickly built a loyal following, and it aligns with our plans to deepen interactivity across the Spotify ecosystem.”
