Spotify Shuts Down Spotify Live

Add as preferred source on Google

Spotify Live was originally designed to compete with the live music listening app Clubhouse. However, the company has now decided to shut down their standalone live music app. Spotify Live, which was previously known as Greenroom, enabled users to listen into various stations and live discussions, and participate via the app. Whether the decision was made due to dwindling user numbers or simply as part of a larger restructuring is unclear. Regardless, many of the features of the app will still be able to be accessed from the main Spotify app. So, fans of Spotify Live don’t have to worry too much, as many of the aspects they tuned into the app for will still be available. Here is everything you need to know as Spotify shuts down Spotify live, including potential reasons why it happened, and where you can access the app’s main features after it’s gone.

Why Was Spotify Live Shut Down?

While some believe that music streaming will eventually replace live broadcasts entirely, there is still an audience for live audio. Whether it’s radio-type broadcasts, listening parties, or podcast recordings, many users love experiencing audio in real time along with others. However, this audience tends to fluctuate over the time as users gain and lose interest. It saw a particularly large wave of interest in 2021, which is when Spotify purchased Betty Labs for approximately $67 million. Clubhouse launched in 2020 and gained a significant following within the pandemic audience.

Spotify is far from the only app shutting down its live audio features. Facebook has gotten rid of its live audio rooms, and Reddit closed down Reddit Talk. With less downloads and fewer participants, it seems that standalone live audio simply doesn’t have the widespread reach that it used to. Even back in December, many of the live shows that had been planned on Spotify Live were cancelled.

How To Access Live Features

There will still be live elements accessible on the Spotify app, as well as different ways for fans and artists to interact. The app supports listening parties and group sessions, which can range from artists dropping new music to friends hanging out to listen to some tunes together.

In addition, you can also get involved with live audio on Twitter Spaces and Amazon’s live radio app Amp.
