Stranger Things Winona Ryder Says She Accidentally 'Married' Keanu Reeves

Actors have done some pretty crazy things for a role, but Winona Ryder might’ve topped the list when she said she accidentally got ‘married’ to Keanu Reeves on set.

It turns out Ryder gets up to some mad antics in roles other than Joyce in Stranger Things as back in 2018 the 50-year-old told Entertainment Weekly her and Reeves got married when filming the 1992 movie Dracula.

Married on set

While promoting their 2018 rom-com Destination Wedding Ryder explained back when they were filming Dracula the director, Francis Ford Coppola, ‘used a real Romanian priest’ to preside over their character’s wedding ceremony in the movie – a ceremony which they did in full.

She said: ‘We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life.

‘In that scene, Francis used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.’

While the 57-year-old didn’t seem 100% convinced he was married to the Edward Scissorhands actress, initially, he did later say in 2019, when appearing on The Talk, he said Ryder will still sometimes call him “husband”, according to Paper Mag.

‘Once in a while, I will get a text: “Hello, husband”. I didn’t really believe her, and then Francis Ford Coppola, the director of Dracula, contacted Winona and said publicly that, “Yeah, that really happened”,’ he explained.

So at least in Romania, in the ‘eyes of God’ these two are married, right?

Crossing a line

However, besides getting married there were some things Ryder wouldn’t do for the role and some things her co-stars wouldn’t do either.

When speaking to The Sunday Times, Ryder explained the film’s director Coppola, tried to get her Dracula co-stars to make her cry by hurling abuse at her to make her cry so her crying would be believable during the moment Dracula – played by Gary Oldman – transformed into a pile of rats.

‘To put it in context, I’m supposed to be crying,’ Ryder explained. ‘Literally, Richard R Grant, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu… Francis was trying to get all of them to yell things that would make me cry. But Keanu wouldn’t, Anthony wouldn’t… It just didn’t work. I was, like, really? It kind of did the opposite.’

Despite this horrific incident, she did go on to say she and Coppola are ‘good’ now and are on good friendship terms.
