It isn’t unusual to see video games turned into films nowadays. From Sonic the Hedgehog to Tomb Raider even down to Angry Birds, if a game can be made into a film, chances are, it will be.
Apart from the 1993 live-action adaptation of the game (which we don’t talk about), it is surprising that it has taken this long for us to get a Super Mario Bros film.
Fans are excited to be getting another shot at making this game into a hit film, despite some fans voicing their displeasure at having American Chris Pratt voice the famously Italian Mario.

Super Mario Bros. Movie
In October 2022, Illumination released a highly anticipated teaser trailer for the Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The video game traditionally followed Mario on his quest to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser’s castle. However, with several spin-offs and decades of different narratives incorporated into the game, this movie could have an endless number of plots.
From the teaser, we know that it is set in Mario’s fictional home of Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser is seen to attack a penguin kingdom along with his army of Koopas, so this seems to be the main conflict of the movie.
The film will be released on 7 April 2023.
Who Is Voicing The Characters in Super Mario?
Several fans are disappointed that Charles Martinet would not be voicing Mario, as he did in the video games originally. However, it has been reported that Martinet will star in the film through an unknown cameo.
Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Chris Pratt will voice the title character. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day, voicing his brother, Luigi.
Jack Black, who voices Bowser, told fans at a New York Comic-Con that Bowser ‘has a musical side’.
He added, ‘I did bring some of my heavy metal roots because Bowser is kind of like a heavy metal rockstar. You know, a big, strong, and scary rock star. And I did a little bit of rocking.’
Other cast members include Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), Keegan-Michael Key (The Prom), Seth Rogan (Bad Neighbours), Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Sebastian Maniscalco (Green Book), Kevin Michael Richardson (Mortal Kombat) and Khary Payton (The Walking Dead).
