The Best Netflix Modern Christmas Movies

Cicely McFarlane November 20, 2022

Over the past five years Netflix has dedicated time and effort into producing yearly Christmas films. So what are the best Netflix modern Christmas movies?

These offerings have become a Christmas rite of passage, as many of the Christmas film favourites  have turned to sequels, which the target audience absolutely love.

Here is a list of a few of my top Netflix original Christmas movies, when they were released, and what their storyline is.

If you haven’t managed to get around to seeing them in previous years, then I suggest you take the time to watch them this year as they really are lighthearted, funny, and family friendly.

A Christmas Prince

The original Christmas Prince movie was released in 2017 and has now had two sequels. The story follows a young journalist (Amber) who is sent abroad to discover the hidden secrets of a prince who is shunning his responsibility and his royal duties.

Amber soon falls in love with Prince Richard. They face many obstacles (obviously) yet this predictable but romantic film is a very sweet story.

It is set in a location surrounded by Christmas lodges and huge snowy mountains. This adds more festive spirit to the storyline.

The Princess Switch

The Princess Switch which was first released in 2018 and, much like A Christmas Prince has also had two sequels. There has been talk about the fourth film coming to Netflix this year.

This story is about a Duchess who decides to switch places with her doppelganger who is a baker from Chicago. Both characters are played by Vanessa Hudgens.

This story surrounds love interests as both find their soul mates in their doppelgänger’s life. Essentially it follows the loose lines of The Parent Trap and Monte Carlo. However, the Christmas narrative and direction of this film makes it stand out from the others.

Love Hard

This is the most recent film to come to Netflix as it aired in 2021. Love Hard follows writer Natalie, who is renowned for commenting on her failed love life and how dating apps do not work.

Natalie (played by Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev) ends up being catfished and going to surprise the man she thought she was dating for Christmas.

The person catfishing her, John Lin, was actually using his friend Tag’s pictures. To make amends he tries to give Natalie the chance to fall for her dream man.

Spoiler alert this doesn’t end up being Tag, as the two grow closer together throughout their mission.

The best Netflix modern Christmas movies are full of everything we love about the season. So what are you waiting for?
