Globally, QS ranks the top four universities for sustainability in 2023 as the University of California, Berkeley, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, and the University of Edinburgh, with the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney tying for fifth place.
THE had a slightly different lineup for their top universities for climate action, ranking their top five as the University of Tasmania, the University of Victoria, Wageningen University & Research, Arizona State University and King Abdulaziz University.

While only one UK university made it to the top of these ranking lists, there are many universities in the UK that are making great steps for the environment.
The University of Edinburgh has divested from fossil fuels as well as committed to net-0 carbon by 2040. Manchester Metropolitan University is developing a hydrogen fuel cell innovation centre as well as planning for net-0 carbon by 2038. King’s College London has developed the King’s Climate Action Network.
