The world has woken up to the news that Meat Loaf has passed away at the age of 74. At first glance, an American rock star who exploded in the 70s may not seem relevant to student culture. But that would be doing the legend and his songs a huge disservice.
Meat Loaf transcends age. He was – and remains – a true great. And he is a lot more relevant to today’s students than some may think. A star of cult favourites The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Fight Club, his music also inspired a new generation of musicians that we listen to today.
Known for his flamboyant shows, outstanding tunes and unique song titles, here is the Meat Loaf playlist that students will no doubt relate to.
Read ’em and Weep
Remember that feeling when you read the comments on your first ever uni essay? Gone are the kind words and guidance of your favourite secondary school teacher, replaced by your tutor’s harsh analysis that brings even the most confident student down a few pegs.
University is a whole new ball game and you’ve suddenly realised you need to learn to write essays all over again.
You Took the Words Right out of my Mouth
It’s your first seminar and you’ve got a great point to make. All you need to do is wait for your tutor to stop talking then, bam, you’ll stun the whole room with your brilliance. But that moment never comes. Someone else gets there first.
Wallowing for the rest of the session, you’re convinced that will be your last great thought ever!
Bat out of Hell
It’s the night to end all nights. Everyone is on their best form and this will go down in history. You know you should pace yourself but, instead, you shoot out of the traps like Meat Loaf’s proverbial bat out of hell.
Individual limits are forgotten. Every second is for drinking, dancing, living!!!
It’s all coming back to me now
It’s the morning after the night before and everything is coming back to you. Yes, it did go down in history. But not as you would have hoped.
Did you really threaten to sue the bouncers at your favourite club? Did you really tell your secret crush that you’ve loved them since Freshers Week? Did you really ruin any chance of getting your house deposit back?
Life is a lemon and I want my money back
University is expensive and, let’s face it, not always worth it. This song is for the times you think you’ve been diddled. You’ll be paying your student loans back for decades and you’re not sure if your degree will make the ‘lemonade’ once promised.
All revved up with no place to go
Attending university during a pandemic is not what anyone dreamed of. The last two years have transformed uni life for hundreds of thousands of students. Too often, either through lockdowns or contracting Covid themselves.
Many students would have loved the chance to get out there but they simply couldn’t.
Not a dry eye in the house
From wide-eyed Freshers to best friends forever. When you say goodbye to your uni mates at the end of your final year, expect the tears to flow long into the night.
You’ve been there for each other through thick and thin and, hopefully, you will always be in each other’s lives. But the end of university is as uncertain as the start. Tonight it’s time to cry, laugh, then cry some more.
