If there’s one thing TikTok is great for, it’s starting a new viral trend – the latest is the “scrunchie challenge” and we’ve got it explained and some great examples.
The video-sharing app has made trends out of songs, dances, water bottles and even instant noodles, but now it’s all about creators taking on the “scrunchie challenge” – and it’s had plenty of variations on the app.

What is the TikTok Scrunchie Challenge?
On TikTok, creators love to take on a challenge and the latest means using loads of scrunchies in long hair.
It’s pretty simple a person creates a ponytail with one scrunchie, then proceeds to add more and more scrunchies to the loose hair until it’s packed with the colourful bands. The ultimate goal is, seemingly, to see if you can get the ponytail to stand up on its own.
Here are some brilliant examples:
It’s simple to give it a try yourself:
- pull your hair into a high ponytail
- add more scrunchies close to the previous ones
- make sure they’re tight
- keep going until the whole ponytail is encased in a scrunchie and don’t forget to record it and add a catchy song to put it on TikTok
The trend #scrunchiechallenge has had over 2.7 million views on the video-sharing app and thousands of videos made.
Other versions of the TikTok Scrunchie challenge
The other versions of the challenge include TikTok creators either matching their clothes to the randomly selected scrunchie colour or their make-up.
Some users have gone for the make-up version of the TikTok scrunchie challenge – with one user creating a whole look based on the bobbles she picked, including a foundation look based on a leopard print scrunchie.
Other users varied up the scrunchie challenge to make a “perfect” messy bun using just one scrunchie or attempting to match their clothing choice for that day to a randomly picked scrunchie.
