Amazon Prime released the first series of The Wilds back in December of 2020 and it received nothing but glowing reviews.
Naturally a second series was made, released in May of 2022. But, despite the seemingly positive reception, this show has now been cancelled.
Fans have quickly taken to Twitter to voice their opinion of the cancellation, even creating their own hashtag #savethewilds.
Future plots
Series one of The Wilds follows a group of girls trying to survive on a deserted island after their plane crashes. We soon find out that this crash was planned and that the girls are part of a social experiment.
The following series impliments the same principal. However a group of boys are introduced on the opposite part of the same island. By the end of the series, both groups have joined together and are trying to find a way out of the experiment.
The show was left on a cliffhanger, leaving fans to believe there must be a third series in the works. However, this was not the case.
When talking to TVLine in May 2022, executive producer of the show, Amy B Harris, even described her excitement of how the two groups would work together in future series.
‘I’m very excited to see how these two groups, who have really coalesced in a very strong way, protecting one another, fighting with one another, how when these two groups kind of smash together and the explosions that will possibly come from that are very exciting.’
Reviews
The show seemed to be on the rise after its knockout first series. Some critics argue that the show’s cancellation came from the introduction of the boys instead of sticking with the original cast of girls.
However, the reviews are in, and they are still quite positive.
Rotten Tomatoes has The Wilds series one and two at a collective 88% audience score.
Both series have a 7.2/10 on IMDb.
Lucy Mangan for The Guardian gave The Wilds a three star rating.
Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com labelled the show as the ‘unexpected hit of the season’.
Goodbyes
After the show’s official cancellation was reported by Deadline in July 2022, cast members have taken to social media to say their goodbyes.
Shannon Berry, who plays Dottie, took to her Instagram story to say ‘Thank you Dottie for being the most amazing part of these past 4 years. I will miss this unsinkable forever.’
Mia Healy, who plays Shelby, also took to Instagram to say ‘I love you all, I love you Shelby. I am forever changed & eternally grateful.’
